What is the SPD Ability Walk 2017?

The SPD Ability Walk 2017 is SPD's second walk organised to raise funds to provide programmes and services that enable and empower people with disabilities to be independent and self-reliant. These include therapy, vocational skills training, assistive technology, early intervention, day care and employment, educational and social support. The Walk provides an opportunity for everyone of different abilities to walk together and serves to promote inclusion and raise awareness of disabilities. There will also be a carnival with food, games, activities and stage performances where participants can get to know more about disability issues.

Where will the funds raised go to?

The funds raised will be channelled to help over 5,000 people with disabilities served through the programmes and services offered at SPD.

When is the SPD Ability Walk 2017?

It will be held on 27 August 2017 (Sunday). The flag-off time for the walk will be at 8am.

What is the distance of the walk?

The walk distance is 3km.

Where are the starting and ending points of the Walk?

The Walk will begin and end at the same point - Dragon & Phoenix Court.

Are there any meals catered for the participants?

Meals are not provided. There will be food and drinks available at the carnival.

By Car Via Ayer Rajah Expressway (AYE)
1. Take exit 15A from AYE
2. Follow Jalan Ahmad Ibrahim, Yuan Ching Road and Japanese Garden Road to Chinese Garden Road

Via Pan Island Expressway (PIE)
1. Take exit 31 from PIE
2. Take Boon Lay Way and Yuan Ching Road to Chinese Garden Road

Are there parking lots available?

There are approximately 14 parking lots at Japanese Garden and 30 parking lots at Chinese Garden. Parking is free and is based on a first-come-first-served basis. No reservation of parking lots are allowed.

What should I bring to the event?

Participants are strongly encouraged to bring along an umbrella/raincoat in case of rain.

Will there be baggage deposit services?

No, there will not be any baggage deposit service provided at the event.

What happens if there is wet weather or haze on the event day?

Participants are strongly encouraged to regularly check the SPD Ability Walk event website or SPD Facebook for the latest updates on the event.

In the event of heavy rain during the Walk, participants are advised to proceed to the nearest shelters (e.g. Pavilions, pagodas, toilets, etc).

Should there be haze on that day, measures will be taken according to NEA's haze guidelines. SPD will constantly monitor the 3-hour PSI level and advise participants to move indoors if the PSI levels exceed 100. SPD will exercise their discretion in allowing the event to continue if PSI levels falls within the acceptable range. Participants are strongly encouraged to bring along their own umbrella or raincoat in case of rain as well as face mask for some form of protection from the haze. We regret that no refunds will be made should the event be cancelled due to inclement weather.

Advisory on Zika virus

SPD will closely monitor the Zika virus situation and will make corresponding decisions about the Walk for the safety of participants, based on the advisory provided by the Ministry of Health (MOH).

Participants are strongly encouraged to apply adequate mosquito repellent and to wear long, covered clothing (if deemed necessary) on the event date.
